ReGenerate is a bioenergy company focused on converting low-value wood residues from local logging and wood products industries into renewable power and biochar. ReGenerate harvests its high-quality, high-carbon biochar from its bioenergy facility located in Livermore Falls, Maine which also produces ~284,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. The biochar produced is deployed as sustainable landfill cover, and the ReGenerate team is exploring additional local applications, which could include soil amendment, water filtration, and environmental remediation. Significant independent research and studies are being conducted to explore the many beneficial applications of biochar. ReGenerate will look to collaborate with our established partners in our academic community to further pursue local applications. Our biochar undergoes regular testing and has a total organic carbon content of 82-85% and hydrocarbon ratio results ranging from 0.16-0.29. Both statistics are indicative of a very stable biochar that is suitable for carbon sequestration and long-term soil improvement which could provide benefits to the agricultural community.

First Puro biochar project in China, pyrolyzing agricultural waste into biochar for soil improvement. China generates approximately 0.8 billion tons of agricultural waste annually. Treatment of agricultural waste is a significantly challenge since burning or crushing/returning to fields pose environmental risks. In the meanwhile, excessive fertilizer use, driven by yield demands, dramatically increased greenhouse gas emissions and non-point source pollution, threatening the agroecosystems. Nanjing Nian’da Biochar Project addresses above issues by partnering with farmers to collect agricultural waste and centrally pyrolyze into biochar, then applied to the same fields providing feedstock. This approach long-term sequesters CO2, enhances soil quality, reduces fertilizer use, boosts crop yields/quality, and increases farmer income & awareness, advancing sustainable agriculture. The project is currently operating one production line and has generated 330 CORCs in the first crediting period. With carbon credit incomes, it aims to reach full capacity by 2025 (1,500 CORCs/year) and expand with two additional lines by 2026-27 (4,500 CORCs/year) to benefit larger community.

Mast is the world’s first and only end-to-end, technology-driven reforestation company. As wildfires intensify across the western United States, forest loss is accelerating, leaving landowners without affordable or effective solutions to restore their land. Mast addresses this challenge by providing rapid, climate-resilient reforestation at no cost to landowners, funded by the sale of high-quality biomass burial carbon removal credits. Through our subsidiaries, Silvaseed—a trusted, 130-year-old nursery and the largest seed supplier in the Western U.S.—and Cal Forest Nursery, California's leading seedling provider, Mast grows over 36 million seedlings each year. Our integrated services cover every stage of reforestation, from wild seed collection and seedling cultivation to site planning, planting, monitoring, and carbon project development. At Mast Wood Preserve MT1 in Montana, we’re pioneering our restorative approach by combining biomass burial with long-term land stewardship. The biomass for this project consists of fire-killed ponderosa pine trees, most of which was cut and stacked after the 2021 Poverty Flats Fire. Initially slated for burning—which would release stored carbon back into the atmosphere in 2025—the logs will instead be permanently buried at a dedicated storage site, in dry, oxygen-limited conditions designed to prevent decomposition, and durably remove carbon from the atmospheric cycle. The MT1 project will permanently sequester approximately 5,000 tonnes of CO₂e. The burial site is protected by a conservation easement for at least 100 years, and environmental sensors will continuously monitor site conditions and greenhouse gas emissions. After burial, the area will be restored with native grasses, supporting its ongoing use for grazing. To ensure long-term project integrity, Mast will establish an endowment fund dedicated to future monitoring, maintenance, and stewardship. Site operations are currently underway, with biomass burial completion expected by May 2025. Carbon credits from the project are anticipated to be issued as early as September 2025.

Biocarbon Tech Asia is a pyrolysis project being developed in Malaysia that will pyrolyse palm trunk waste, bamboo and other agricultural residue to produce biochar and green energy while sequestering carbon. The project intends to establish a truly circular model for operating palm plantations that will not only upcycle every waste stream generated on site but also remove carbon, reduce fertiliser dependencies and meet local energy requirements. The palm processing activities in Malaysia’s palm plantations generate several waste streams like empty fruit bunches, kernel shells, waste effluent, mesocarp and palm tree trunks. Every year, these plantations fell old oil palm trees that have reached the end of their productive life to facilitate replantation. The poor physical and chemical properties of the trunks of these trees make them impossible to be repurposed for traditional timber and plywood uses. Thus, they are broken up, piled in a line and left to decompose on the plantation site, taking up to 5 years to fully compost. Composting is a form of recycling that does not fully utilise the potential of the material. Furthermore, since this felling occurs on a daily basis, the emissions that the composting activities generate on the entire site cannot be ignored. Located in Sabah, East Malaysia, Biocarbon Technologies has already implemented several initiatives on its palm plantation to make their site operations green. Some examples include anaerobic digestion plant, biomass boiler to generate green electricity and running biomethane-fuelled truck fleets. However, it soon became clear that pyrolysis would be a better way of handling palm tree trunks than composting, both economically and environmentally. Diverted from the being left to compost in the fields, the palm trunks will be chipped, dewatered and dried before being pyrolysed by two pyrolysis units to sequester carbon and produce sap (a substance used to enhance biogas production), biochar and syngas. The syngas, when burned, will produce green energy that will power different plantation operations. Through an existing steam generator, it will produce green electricity to meet local energy requirements. It will also support energy requirements of torrefaction, a process that will produce black pellets, a fuel essential for steel industry’s green transition. The biochar will be used on the plantation to reduce fertiliser requirements as well as sold for both, soil and non-soil applications like construction material substitutes.

CarboHeroes will remove up to 0.5 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2050 through a circular economy model based on production and application of biochar, which is explicitly highlighted as key carbon removal technology with several co-benefits to fight climate change by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – a body of the UN) and UNFCCC. Biochar will be incorporated into the soil, increasing its health while at the same time sequestering massive amounts of carbon. In this way we combine sustainable agriculture with a significant carbon reduction effect by using agricultural waste. Biochar is produced by thermal carbonization (“Pyrolysis”) and is one outstanding way of establishing circular agricultural models. Biochar’s porous structure and internal surface area enable it to store water and nutrients and bind pollutants. In addition, a significant amount of the carbon of the source material remains stable the long term, effectively removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The first module of the scalable business is planned in Costa Rica. We have secured an annual amount of >80,000 tons wood residue as input material for the pyrolysis process. Furthermore, we can access a multiple of tons per year from the coffee, pineapple, and sugarcane industry. We will help companies achieving their net-zero goals in creating, issuing, and trading high-quality carbon credits with the permanent fixation of the carbon in the soil. In addition, there are numerous applications for biochar in markets inside and outside agriculture that make processes and products more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The business model is based on the massively growing carbon credit market in the first phase, supplemented by selling into biochar application cases in the second phase. Of course, the usage (& sales) of thermal energy is considered in all phases. The company's impact is manifold. In collaboration with local farmers, we significantly contribute to the fight against climate change while ensuring the production of high-quality food. The Three Mountains Cocoa Biochar project is establishing a biochar production facility in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Three Mountains Cocoa is a premium organic cocoa processing company that has earned a reputation for prioritizing the welfare of farmers, the environment, and the surrounding communities. By working directly with their network of 2,000 local farmers, the Three Mountains Cocoa Biochar project aims to collect 16,000 tons of cocoa pods annually for conversion into biochar. This project will not only create a new revenue stream for farmers but will also help address climate change by converting agricultural waste into carbon-negative products. The partnership will promote sustainable farming practices while supporting carbon sequestration efforts, ultimately reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing soil health, generating 8,000 tons/year CO2 of carbon credits using high-technology biochar production. The produced biochar will be blended with manure and distributed to over 2,000 smallholder farmers in the Ashanti region of Ghana who supply Three Mountains Cocoa with their cocoa beans to be used as a soil amendment mixed with pig manure and applied to cropland and forest surfaces. These smallholder farmers will have the opportunity to earn an additional $5-8 per ton of cocoa pods that would typically go to waste. The biochar will enhance soil health and boost agricultural yields for the smallholder farmers working with Three Mountains Cocoa. In addition, the project will contribute to overall improvements in soil quality and water health, helping to mitigate climate change impacts while supporting the preservation of surrounding natural habitats, including a UNESCO-protected forest. In the baseline scenario, cacao pods are left to decay without being utilized for energy production. This accumulation of thousands of tons of cacao pods placed a significant strain on the environment and local communities. As the pods decomposed, they released large amounts of CO2e and methane, similar to the emissions from open burning. Additionally, the decaying pods attracted pests and contributed to downstream water pollution. The first crediting period of this single-site project is expected to remove an estimated 8,000 tons of CO2e (tCO2e) annually, leading to the removal of an estimated 56,000 tCO2e over a 7-year period. Terraton is a US technology company, a project developer, and is the project owner for the Three Mountains Cocoa Biochar project. Terraton is building the first and only Carbon ERP (C-ERP) solution and is focused on making Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) businesses more accessible and scalable. As global emissions continue to rise, Terraton's mission is to facilitate the setup of thousands of carbon removal facilities in the coming decade, aiming to remove up to 10 gigatons of CO2 annually. In our pursuit of innovation, we have developed advanced biomass refinery technology aimed at creating a circular economy for Thai farmers. We have established the country's largest pyrolysis plant, which converts agricultural waste into biochar. A portion of the biochar is used to enhance soil quality, while another part is incorporated into cement and concrete. The facility uses a continuous pyrolysis process that not only meets local environmental standards but also carefully controls emissions to reduce our impact on the community. Our post-treatment technology, co-developed with our internal startup ‘Arbon’, ensures that the biochar possesses the ideal properties for these applications, enabling permanent carbon sequestration. The developed biochar can be used to enhance performance of concrete and partially replace usage of clinker and cement in concrete applications leading to further reduction in carbon emission from the construction industry. In soil applications, our biochar enhances crop productivity, which can lead to increased income for farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices by enriching soil fertility. Moreover, transforming agricultural waste into biochar contributes to addressing the PM 2.5 pollution issue. Many farmers in Thailand traditionally burn leftover materials after harvest to prepare for the next planting cycle. Our goal is to purchase agricultural waste, such as rubber tree stump and other residues, to discourage burning and provide farmers with an additional income stream. Looking to the future, our plans extend beyond producing biochar for our own mining site rehabilitation. We are also exploring solutions for utilizing inorganic waste to accelerate weathering (EW), which is another technology for carbon sequestration. We are optimistic that the sale of carbon credits will enable us to achieve significant carbon sequestration targets. CarbonZero.eco, a Silicon Valley startup, is developing a facility to convert almond shells into biochar through pyrolysis using the BST-50S unit from Beston. This process heats the shells in a low-oxygen environment, producing both biochar and synthetic gas (syngas). The syngas will be cleaned and filtered, then used as a renewable energy source to power the unit, enabling a self-sustaining operation. The project, scheduled to launch in June 2025, will be located at the Cortina facility in Williams, CA, on land owned by the local almond co-op. Designed to process 6 tonnes of biomass per hour and operate 310 days per year, the facility aims to handle 20,000 tonnes of biomass annually. The biochar will be provided at no cost to nearby almond farms, supporting sustainable agricultural practices in the region. In July 2024 we at Exomad Green launched our second biochar facility in Riberalta, Bolivia. We expect to scale up our operations significantly during 2025. This facility will leverage the power of biochar to sequester up to 120,000 tons of CO2 annually. But our vision goes beyond environmental impact. Exomad Green is about creating a better, more sustainable world for everyone. We're striving to improve the quality of life for over 250,000 regional inhabitants, generate green jobs, foster local economic growth, and champion environmental justice across the region. Join us as we embark on this transformative journey, turning residues into wealth and cultivating a more sustainable future. Our process begins at the source with the collection of biomass residues from local sawmills, providing us with an abundant, renewable source of biomass. The biomass is then transported to our state-of-the-art pyrolysis plant, where it undergoes a meticulous sorting and pre-treatment process that includes pre-drying and grinding, using energy-efficient machinery. The biomass is then subjected to pyrolysis at approximately 600 degrees Celsius, during which the carbon in the biomass is trapped, preventing it from being released as carbon dioxide. This results in the production of biochar, a rich carbon product with a unique honeycomb-like structure, ideal for soil enhancement. The biochar we produce improves soil fertility by increasing its capacity to retain water and nutrients, enhancing microbial activity, regulating soil pH, and aiding in soil remediation by absorbing toxins and heavy metals. We then donate our biochar to local indigenous communities, empowering them to enhance their agricultural yields. By doing so, we not only support their livelihoods but also actively contribute to reducing deforestation, ensuring the preservation and sustainable use of our invaluable South American forests. But the benefits of our project do not stop at soil improvement for the local communities. Exomad Green is committed to exceeding environmental standards. We adhere strictly to local and national regulations and have implemented a water treatment plan, enabling us to recycle and reuse water within the plant. We also employ a system for the effective capture and utilization of bio-oil and syngas by-products of the pyrolysis process, further minimizing our environmental footprint. Examples of usage info Biochar, a product of pyrolysis, has the ability to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) because of the nature of its production process and the properties of the resulting material. Here's how the sequestered CO2 in biochar is used or stored: Carbon Capture during Production: During the pyrolysis process, organic matter is heated in an oxygen-limited environment. This prevents the full decomposition of the organic matter into CO2 and other gases. Instead, a significant portion of the carbon in the biomass is retained in a stable form within the biochar. Stable Carbon Structure: Biochar is mostly composed of carbon in a very stable form. This means that it doesn't easily decompose or oxidize to release CO2 back into the atmosphere. As a result, when biochar is applied to soil, the carbon it contains remains sequestered in that stable form for a very long time—potentially hundreds to thousands of years. Soil Application: When biochar is incorporated into the soil, it essentially locks away the carbon it contains. In other words, the carbon in the biochar is removed from the short-term carbon cycle because it won't be quickly returned to the atmosphere as CO2. Enhancement of Soil Carbon Storage: Biochar addition to soils can also indirectly lead to increased soil organic carbon levels by promoting the microbial processes that incorporate CO2 from the atmosphere into soil organic matter. Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions: In addition to its carbon storage capabilities, biochar has been found to reduce the emissions of other greenhouse gases from soil, notably nitrous oxide (N2O). It can do this by influencing soil microbial processes. Displacement of Fossil Fuel Carbon: The pyrolysis process that produces biochar also generates bio-oil and syngas, both of which are used as energy sources. Climeworks: Pioneering Carbon Removal with Direct Air Capture and Storage Climeworks is at the forefront of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, specializing in the development and deployment of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to combat global CO₂ concentrations. Our mission is to provide a scalable, permanent carbon removal solution that contributes significantly to reaching climate targets and eventually reducing the global CO2 concentration in our atmosphere. Our second, larger flagship DAC plant, Mammoth, located in Iceland next to its smaller predecessor, Orca, marks a milestone in the scale-up of carbon removal technology. Certified by Puro.earth right from the start, its operation allows companies and individual customers to reliably and permanently remove historic or unavoidable CO2 from the atmosphere. Project Details 1. Project location: Hellisheidi (Reykjavik), Iceland The Mammoth plant is strategically situated in Iceland, utilizing the vicinity of one of the largest geothermal energy providers to tap into abundant renewable heat and electricity to power its operations. This location allows for the seamless integration of DAC technology with geothermal energy, ensuring a low-carbon footprint for the entire process. 2. Technology: Direct Air Capture and Storage via mineralization Direct Air Capture: Our DAC technology captures CO₂ directly from the ambient air by passing it through specialized filters that selectively bind with carbon dioxide. The captured CO₂ is then harvested, and processed for permanent storage. Storage via mineralization: Our partner Carbfix, a pioneering Icelandic company, converts the CO₂ captured by Climeworks into stable carbonate minerals through a natural mineralization process. The CO₂ is mixed with water and injected deep into basaltic rock formations, where it reacts with the minerals to form solid carbonates, ensuring permanent and safe storage. 3. Operational capacity and certification Initial capacity: The Mammoth plant designed for a capture capacity of up to 36,000 tons per year. The effective removal, substituting for losses, grey emissions and other considerations is estimated to be around 22,000 tons per year once the plant is complete and fully ramped up. Mammoth’s capacity represents a significant step towards scaling our operations from thousands of tons at our first plant, Orca, to tens of thousands of tons at Mammoth. One of many steps to scaling carbon removal to a billion ton scale required by climate science. Certification: Mammoth is the second DAC plant to be certified by Puro.earth. Importantly, applying learnings and processes from our DAC plant Orca, Mammoth’s operations are certified from the start. Certification ensures that our processes meet rigorous standards for environmental integrity, and the permanence, as well as the additionality of our carbon removal credits. 4. Environmental and social impact Permanent CO₂ removal: The mineralization process ensures that the captured CO₂ is permanently removed from the atmosphere, contributing to long-term climate stability. From Sea to Sky: The Future of Direct Air Capture Aeon Blue’s groundbreaking Direct Air Capture (DAC) solution produces drop-in sustainable fuels (eFuels) while geologically storing significant amounts of carbon. By integrating DAC with permanent geologic storage, Aeon Blue's first industrial facility will demonstrate a complete carbon removal system that also displaces fossil fuels, setting a new standard for Direct Air Capture and eFuel technology that actively combats climate change. 1. Optimal Coastal Setting: Project Location The project site has been strategically selected to maximize operational efficiency and geological storage potential. The coastal location is on the eastern edge of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and will provide essential direct access to seawater for the DAC process while a 20MW solar farm will power operations. The site's position above the Horton Group geologic formation - consisting of fractured shale and sandstone capped by Windsor evaporites - enables direct CO2 injection and storage for >1000 years. By repurposing former industrial land, the project leverages existing infrastructure while supporting regional economic development. 2. Direct Air Capture + Carbon Neutral Fuels: The Technology Aeon Blue's proprietary seawater reactor technology uses solar-powered electrolysis to generate both hydrogen and a sodium hydroxide CO2 capture solution. This solution efficiently absorbs CO2 from air using a capture tower, requiring minimal energy input due to sodium hydroxide's natural absorption properties. 25% of the air-captured CO2 is combined with the hydrogen to make drop-in eNatural Gas for the local community, while the remaining 75% (6,800 net tonnes/yr) is compressed for geologic storage. 3. This sustainable fertilizer is produced by blending wood-based biochar with animal manure, dairy and slaughterhouse waste, and digestate from biogas production. The primary market for the fertilizer is local agriculture, with surplus volumes distributed to other agricultural regions in Norway. The project will operate from a repurposed 600 m² facility within a 25,000 m² industrial site in Austertana, Finnmark, located at Kvartsitveien, 9842 Tana, Norway. To ensure efficiency and scalability, Biopower Tana has partnered with a leading Australian technology provider to deliver and install a pyrolysis reactor and supporting equipment, capable of producing 4,040 tons of biochar-based fertilizer annually. The project employs pyrolysis, a process that heats woody biomass at high temperatures without oxygen, stabilizing carbon in a durable form resistant to decomposition. This carbon remains sequestered for over 100 years when applied to soil, making biochar a net-negative carbon process. Biopower Tana’s operations are expected to remove 2.43 tonnes of CO2 for every dry metric tonne of biochar produced.
